How can you tell if compost is mature and good?
Mature, good compost smells like soil, has a fine texture and does not increase in temperature when the pile is mixed.
Main steps for checking quality
-
01
Appearance and smell
The original materials should no longer be clearly distinguishable. Good compost is dark, crumbly, and smells like a forest, not sour or chemical. -
02
Check the temperature
If the pile heats up significantly after mixing, the composting process is not yet complete. Leave it for a few more weeks and maintain the moisture level of a wrung-out sponge. -
03
Using it in the garden
Spread a thin layer before planting or place it around plants without piling it up against the stems. -
04
What to avoid
Do not add meat, fat, infected plants, or weeds with seeds.
